Magnum 6K8 Managed Switches & PS14P PoE Switches Bring Video to Melbourne Light Rail
Melbourne Light Rail System
With 500 trams and 150 million rider-stops available,
Melbourne, Australia has the third largest light rail tramway
network in the world. To better maintain security in the post-
911 and post-Bali bombing world, security officials have ordered
the implementation of large numbers of new video
surveillance cameras at the tram stops.
About DVTel and Its Challenge
DVTel manufactures a series of innovative IP-based video
cameras that are implemented for transportation facilities,
sporting events, and building management, among others.
Selected to provide video security for the Melbourne light
rail tramway network, DVTel needed to find to the best
networking equipment to install out in the field at each of the
tram locations.
DVTel selected GarrettCom’s Magnum 6K8 Managed Field
Switches and PS14P PoE Switches after testing the switches
with their DVTel IP Cameras at the corporate labs in New
Jersey, USA. DVTel was impressed with the outdoor rating,
flexibility, and the PoE capability of the switches.
 The Solution
Each tram stop field location was managed by a Magnum
6K8 Field Switch, which then had one or more PS14P PoE
Switches connected to it. The PS14P switches then
connected several DVTel IP cameras to provide security
monitoring. For some installations, a managed PoE
option for the 6K8 Field Switches is available. GarrettCom
has also developed a new software technology, IGMP-L2,
that allows the streams of video data to be efficiently
managed using only Layer 2 Ethernet switches. This IGMPL2
technology feature is available as a standard part of
the MNS-6K software for all of the Magnum 6K switches.
GarrettCom has a variety of of switches that work with
DVTel’s IP cameras. The Magnum 6K8 Ethernet Field
Switch has “big switch” managed software in a small field
switch package. The 6K8 is a configurable, 8-port managed
switch with a heavy-duty metal case that serves as a heat
sink and is rated IP53 for environmental protection. The
PS14P is a 4-port power source PoE switch that allows
for both networking and power over the same cables.
